University High School students under the instruction of Michael Conklin participated in an “Hour of Code” event with Chester Elementary School students. The Communication and IT Tech students taught 3rd, 4th and 5th introductory coding activities! One 4th grader was particularly impressed, saying “thanks for showing me what I want to do for a job!” The students’ advisor, Michael Conklin, says “It’s exciting to see where these elementary school students will take their interests in computer science over the next 10 years…and what the industry itself will look like in the next 10 years!”
Former East Valley High School Student Matt Montoya recently launched his own startup — and the FBLA experiences and mentorship he enjoyed through high school helped him get there. Austin Cuilty was a Sophomore at East Valley High School. He feels his experiences in DECA have helped equip him with the business and marketing skills he will use in his future career!
The West Valley Robotics team is in their 10th year as a team and it has been a year of firsts. They took first place out of 35 teams in the West Valley competition winning a blue banner (the most prestigious award), and also competed for the entrepreneurship award for the first time and won it at the West Valley and Central Washington event, ending their season ranked 25th out of 155 teams. To top the season off, they qualified for the World Championship in St.Louis, and ultimately placed 38th of 75 teams in their division, having competed alongside 600 teams from 40 countries! One student on the robotics team noted “Our team strives to build not only robots but people.” Team advisor Gabriel Rose echoed this sentiment, saying “This has been the best year our team has ever had, not because the performance of our robot, which has been outstanding. It’s been great because the students on the team took charge, set goals, and did everything necessary to achieve them.”
Central Valley High School Seniors Nic Hinman and Lucas Hansen were presented with an award for excellence in television production at the GSL Scholar Athlete awards banquet. Nicolas Hinman, son of Clint and JoLee Hinman, is a senior at Central Valley High School. He has been involved in This Week in High School Sport since its start. He has been a writer, cameraman, host, and has recently taken over as director of the taping of each show you see every Thursday night. Nic plans to attend Spokane Falls Community College in media production and then Eastern Washington University where he plans to pursue directing. Nic was also involved in the team that received top honors with the National Association of Broadcasters during the Small Market Exchange held in Phoenix, AZ, and was voted in the top 4 of all entries. Lucas Hansen, son of Mike and Coleen Hansen, a senior at Central Valley High School, is the main guy that gets things done for This Week in High School Sports and has added a great deal to story development, editing, and creative design. Lucas’s video team placed 1st overall at the Skills/USA regional video contest in 2015. Lucas’s video segments for This Week in High School Sports productions put professionalism into the only student run primetime television show in the country. Lucas has GPA of 3.30 and plans to attend North Idaho College’s design program where he will receive a broad degree in graphics & web design, video/media, app development, and audio.
